Useful Tips

The Poklon Visitor Centre is located at 930 metres above sea level, on the pass of the same name, which connects—and separates—the Učka Mountain and the Ćićarija Plateau. Although both mountains are known for their mild climate throughout the year, it is important to remember that this is a mountain area, where proper preparation is always advisable.

Before visiting the Poklon Visitor Centre, we recommend keeping the following in mind:

  • Check the weather forecast
  • Since the weather can change quickly, bring clothing that can protect you from rain and wind, as well as a warm layer (even in summer)
  • Check the opening hours of the Visitor Centre
  • If you plan outdoor activities in addition to visiting the Centre, be sure to read the Tips for Staying Safe in Nature

Tips for Staying Safe in Nature

  • Choose a route that you can do physically and time-wise; study it in advance and plan your trip.
  • Do not go into nature alone – always go with at least one other adult or in a group.
  • Inform family or friends about your intended route and expected return time.
  • Use marked hiking, walking, or cycling trails.
  • Be prepared for possible changes in weather conditions.
  • Always bring spare and warm clothing, rain- and windproof layers, and in winter a hat and gloves.
  • Wear appropriate footwear and clothing for outdoor activities.
  • When cycling, always wear a helmet; bring a functioning bike, pump, spare tube, and tools.
  • Always carry enough water and food, a first-aid kit, a fully charged mobile phone, a flashlight, and a whistle.
  • For longer trips, bring a hiking map and a compass.
  • Learn how to read your coordinates on a smartphone.
  • Learn how to use a GPS device to read your location, or install a free app that shows your current coordinates.
  • In mountainous areas, mobile signal may be weak, making voice calls unstable or impossible, but SMS messages often go through even with a poor signal.
  • In winter, be especially careful and keep in mind that daylight fades early.
  • In summer, avoid hiking in unfamiliar terrain.
  • Educate yourself in first aid and learn how to use first-aid equipment.
  • If you have allergies, it is recommended to consult your doctor and carry medication for allergic reactions in case of stings from hornets, bees, etc.
  • If you have a medical condition (e.g. diabetes, heart problems, epilepsy) and/or need essential medication, write this information on a piece of paper and keep it in your first-aid kit so it is available during rescue if needed.
  • Inform group members if you have a medical condition and/or take essential medication, and make sure your medication is accessible and known to others.

Rules of Conduct in Nature
